Vegans believe that all the species were created to live harmoniously in nature. Human beings have no ethical rights to kill and eat other species for their benefit. The whole process of consuming meat and dairy products is utterly distasteful and harmful to the environment. Scientific evidence suggests that pandemics like SARS, EBOLA and COVID-19 came into existence because human beings were not respectful towards natural habitat and animal kingdom.
People used to think that vegans suffer from a lack of nutrition for not having meat as a source of protein. But funnily enough, all the protein in the animal meat comes from plants and vegetables that vegans have access to. If you are worried about protein intake, you may opt a dairy free protein powder shake to meet your daily protein requirements. In this modern-day and age, vegan products are readily available. So, there is no need for you to contribute to the meat and dairy industry, harming the natural order of things.
Now, it is interesting to note that there has been a constant shift in the representation of vegan over the last decade. First, people did not quite understand what veganism was; they often confused veganism with vegetarianism. While vegetarians and vegans do share some similar traits, the terms are far from being synonymous.
Early Representation: In movies and TV shows in the early 2000s and 2010s, vegans were represented by the hippie odd characters. These stock characters were always caricatured of a real persona devoid of any depth in personality. They were almost laughable and always ridiculed for their choice of food.
- Lisa Simpson is one such prominent character who was laughed at for the food choices she made. In shows like ‘How I met your mother’ and “Six Feet Under” veganism was made fun of by introducing a stock vegan character devoid of any personality whatsoever. The vegan characters were either strict with no sense of humor or plain hippie who was too strange to be part of the regular society.
- The Vegan characters were not relatable at all, so it made the public disinterested in the idea of veganism. A conscious message was conveyed to the audience; if they turn vegan or vegetarian, they too will be called weird and boring.
Vegans Celebrities: Past few years, however, seen a massive change in this archaic mindset as more and more celebrity came out as vegans. Hollywood actors like Benedict Cumberbatch, Joaquin Phoenix, Zac Efron, Natalie Portman and others champion the benefit of a plant-based diet. The music industry is not behind to get on this humanitarian trend as Pop Icons like Madonna, Beyoncé, Ellie Goulding, Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus and more came out as vegans over the last few years.
Joaquin Phoenix is a stern activist when it comes to veganism. While accepting his 2020 Oscar win in the best actor category for his role as the Joker, he championed the cause of veganism to a room full of Hollywood legends. More and more people are coming out as vegans and furthering the movement for a brighter tomorrow.
