When buying a laptop, it is vital to consider the basic specs associated with the rig, such as CPU, GPU, display, memory, and storage.

CPU. The central processing unit is the “brain” of your laptop and instructs other components of your system when the laptop is in use. Therefore, it is best to look at all the CPU features, such as its clock speed and core count, when choosing a gaming laptop.

  • Clock Speed. Clock speed will give you an indication of the number of cycles your CPU can execute per second. Higher clock speeds will mean higher processing speeds.
  • Core Count. A core acts as a separate processing unit that can parallel with other cores to get more things done. Most of today’s laptops come with four to eight cores. A laptop with four cores is ideal for office multitasking. However, if you use your laptop for games, it is best to choose a rig with 6 to 8 cores.

If you want consistent gaming performance, it is best to choose a laptop with at least an Intel Core i7 or an AMD Ryzen 7 CPU. Your choice of clock speed will depend on the type of gaming you will use your rig with. Laptops with higher core counts and clock speeds will give you better performance for live streaming gameplays since you will need higher processing power to record your streaming video.

Graphics Processing Unit. If the CPU is the “brain” of your laptop, then the graphics processing unit or GPU is its heart. The GPU is responsible for rendering the images and videos on your screen when you are playing games. In addition, the GPU works alongside the CPU to boost the laptop’s performance in terms of resolution and frame rates.

  • Resolution. Resolution is the degree of how many pixels make up the visual dimensions of any given display. This is expressed in terms of pixel numbers for both width and height. When choosing a gaming laptop, it is best to choose one with at least a 1920×1080 resolution.
  • Frame Rate. Frame rate relates to the number of frames your GPU can process per second. A laptop’s frame rate will determine how smoothly a given game can run on it. Low frame rates will cause the game to appear sluggish and choppy. It is best to choose a GPU with a frame rate of at least 60 fps.

Unlike desktop PCs, a laptop’s GPU is soldered into the mainboard and cannot be upgraded. Therefore, it is essential to choose the best GPU from the start so you won’t have any regrets in the future.

Memory. Random Access Memory or RAM is important in gaming because it boosts the responsiveness of your system and leads to faster loading times. Most of today’s games require your system to have at least 16GB of memory. A laptop with 16GB of RAM is sufficient to play most games; however, if you plan to multitask while gaming, you will need more memory. On the other hand, a laptop with 32GB memory is ideal for graphics-intensive gaming.

Storage. The type of storage a laptop has will determine its speed in accessing stored data. Solid-state drives (SSDs) are more efficient in reading and writing data since they do not have any moving parts than mechanical HDD drive. Therefore, it is best to choose one that uses an SSD drive with at least 512GB of memory to store all your games in one drive when selecting a laptop.
