“A goal without a plan is just a wish.”

Planning is an important part of success. If you were to go on a trip, the first thing you would do is make a plan. There are a lot of things that you need to take into consideration like the road that you would be taking, the number of people who are going to be on the trip, the duration, the destination, the roadblocks, and likewise. Creating a lesson plan is similar to planning a road trip and is pivotal in making the classes efficient and effective.

What is a lesson plan?

A lesson plan is a document that the teacher should create prior to teaching the lesson. It acts as a guidance or a map that talks about the parts that need to be covered, the activities that would be incorporated, the learning objectives, outcomes, and likewise. A lesson plan, helps the teachers to be on schedule and gives them clarity and vision.

How to Make a Lesson Plan?

Making a lesson plan takes time and effort. However, it can be made fun and effective if you know how to do it. Here are a few things you need to know on how to make a lesson plan.

  1. Know your goals

As mentioned, lesson planning is a lot similar to planning a road trip. The first thing that you need to do is know is your destination. Similarly, while creating a lesson plan the first thing that teachers need to define is their objective and goal. For instance, if you are teaching poetry, what do you intend the students to learn. Should they be able to analyze poetic justice, poetic figures, and likewise? Define the objectives and create the lesson plan accordingly.

  1. Create a Roadmap

This would act as a basic overview of what your classes would be like. This overview can be broad. Like major milestones that you want to achieve. Maybe like cover the first half of the poem along with the history of the writer and likewise. This roadmap will help teachers make the lessons more effective. Now that classes have moved online, it is important for teachers to set small targets for themselves and stick to them. Online classes are different than normal classes and that’s why lesson plans have become more important than ever.

  1. Make a schedule

Creating a timeline will help ease the whole process of teaching. A rough timeline would do. For instance, when do you plan to finish the first reading of the poem? Include that in your lesson plan. Now, this timing can vary. You might deviate from topics and venture into concepts beyond the textbook and that’s absolutely fine. Having a rough idea and keeping a track of the time that you are taking to finish the concepts will give you a sense of relief.

  1. Understand your students

There’s no point in creating a lesson plan without understanding your students. The idea is to analyze the students and create a plan that is inclusive. You cannot devise a teaching approach that works without understanding your students. It goes without saying that there would be different types of students in your classroom and one approach won’t cater to all of them. To understand what works for them, the pace at which you should teach, the activities you need to include, and likewise,

  1. Use various teaching methods

This is a continuation of the previous point. Based on the understanding, create various approaches to reach your students. Include these methods in your lesson plans and conduct your classes accordingly. You will notice visible differences and student engagement is bound to increase.

Teaching is a complex process. How to become a teacher is a commonly asked question and one of the things that people tend to forget is that how to become a skilled teacher. Teaching skills are important to make a teacher successful and exemplary. Creating a lesson plan and implementing a plan is sure to make the classes more interesting and powerful.
